DUI - What Happens Next?
"You’re under arrest" are not the words that you want to hear. You have been to a party, had one or two drinks too many and now here you are on the side of the road at 2:00am trying to walk a straight line for the officer who has just pulled you over for drunk driving. You are cooperative; you try to do the field sobriety test, but fail. The next thing you know you have submitted to a breathalyzer test and have blown a .08 or higher. He handcuffs are slapped on your wrist and you take a sobering drive in a police car to jail. You are now officially in trouble. Under Kentucky Law you are by statute driving under the influence or better known as DUI.
While at the jail you sit and wonder, “what did I do to deserve this? I was fine to drive, I was only a few minutes from my home, I didn’t want to leave my car”. While all of this is going through your mind, your handcuffs are removed and you are being fingerprinted, having your mug shot taken and making the shameful call to your friend or family member to come and bail you out of jail. You are placed into a cell until your friends can come to bail you out. While you are there you sober up enough to realize that you are in some serious legal trouble.
You think your life is over. Not only are your friends and family disappointed because you have driven drunk, you fear what is coming next. After you are bailed out of jail, but before your hangover has subsided, you find yourself in a courtroom in front of a judge for your arraignment. You realize by this point that you need a lawyer. Your mind screams “someone help me”. You say to yourself “do I plead guilty or not guilty”. You decide to plead not guilty of DUI and then you learn the second step, the pre-trial conference. You rush out of the courthouse and search for a DUI attorney to deal with your criminal charges. You have made one bad decision and you now wonder how that decision will affect the rest of your life.
It has been said that he who represents himself has a fool for a lawyer. Don’t be a fool. Do not face DUI charges on your own. You need to know your rights. You need to know how you will be affected by entering a guilty plea or going to trial. You need to know what will happen if you get another DUI. You need to know if you will spend more jail time or loose your license. You need someone on your side with the answers who will not judge you, but understands that you made a bad judgment call. You need someone who will fight on your behalf. You need a lawyer.
Here at The Law Office of CH Sweeney we will not judge you for your mistakes, but we will help you deal with consequences of your actions. We understand that everyone makes bad choices sometimes, but that does not make them a bad person. Call us today. We will fight for you!
